La "B" en Terapia: Experiencias, Modelos y Asuntos de la Población Bisexual en Psicoterapia

Las sociedades latinoamericanas tienen una cultura machista y se dejan regir por los “valores” tradicionales en torno a la sexualidad y los roles de género. Puerto Rico, siendo una isla caribeña y latina, se encuentra también influenciado por estos mismos valores tradicionales inclinados por las creencias judeo-cristianas. Estos valores androcéntricos continúan sosteniendo la homo-bifobia u homo-binegatividad generalizada, prejuicio que también afecta a la comunidad de profesionales de la salud. Además, existe una doble discriminación que reciben las personas bisexuales por parte de la comunidad homosexual y la heterosexual, que se trasforma en experiencias que influyen en la disparidad en términos de la salud mental y esta discriminación influye en al aumento de síntomas de depresión y/o ansiedad. Estos síntomas afectan además la autoestima y crea una tendencia al aislamiento. Los/as proveedores de salud mental no pueden replicar los constructos sociales de la bisexualidad que promueven el discrimen. La psicoterapia debe ser un espacio de paz, que promueva una zona libre de discrimen y llena de aceptación y autodeterminación. Reconociendo el ambiente nocivo que construye la sociedad hacia la comunidad bisexual, este artículo pretende ofrecer una revisión de literatura en donde: a) se pueda esbozar los asuntos de salud mental que experimentan las personas bisexuales, b) discutir las intervenciones disponibles para trabajar con esta población, y c) ofrecer recomendaciones para el trabajo clínico e investigativo con esta población.
