Spirituality and Religiosity in Puerto Rican Journals of Psychology: A Bibliometric Analysis

Abstract

Spirituality and religion are ancient concepts whose study has been of great interest in various branches of science. However, it was not until the middle of the 20th century, where research related to issues of spirituality, religion and health began to be important. The objective of this study is to carry out a review and bibliometric analysis with the objective of documenting all the articles published in the principal psychology journals of Puerto Rico. The findings of our review reflected that from 1981 to 2006, the subject of religion and spirituality was invisible in professional psychology journals in Puerto Rico. However, from 2007 to 2018, a total of 18 publications were documented in Puerto Rican psychology journals linked to religious and spiritual issues in the field of mental health. The themes of religiosity and spirituality must be encompassed and promoted by the community of Puerto Rican psychologists, given that Puerto Rican society is one that is strongly connected with their religious and spiritual roots.
