This article presents a brief historical synopsis of the conceptual evolution, as well as official definitions, of the meaning of sexual health. The positive nature of this term is emphasized in respect
to sex and sexuality as an essential life function. Basic elements of reproduction, interpersonal relationships and pleasure that are inherent to sex and sexuality are presented. Examples are given and discussed as to how the emphasis on sexual health can be modified at individual and societal levels, leaving behind the typical concept of sexual health as the absence of sexual problems, underlining the complete enjoyment of this intrinsic function to humanity.
