Salud Sexual en el Adulto Mayor desde la Perspectiva de la Promoción de la Salud

In Puerto Rico, sexuality in the elderly is a cultural, psychological, physiological, educational, and societal associated construct. A large portion of the elderly population still believes that sexual activity ceases after the age of 60. Furthermore, in Puerto Rico’s Annual Health Report shows an increase in the 75 years or older cohort. For this reason, we researched elderly sexuality from the Health Promotion standpoint, focusing on the five approaches of Health Promotion: public policy, community participation, creation of supportive environments, development of personal skills, and reorientation of health services. An exhaustive review of the literature and interviews to experts were made. Furthermore, an analysis regarding health services and organizations available for the elderly population in Puerto Rico was made. Findings indicated that poor knowledge about physical, mental and emotional implications on sexuality was allowing the formulation of myths in several generational groups and among health professionals. There is also a lack of scientific research and programmatic actions regarding sexuality in the elderly. For these reasons, Puerto Rico should encourage an openness culture and social awareness about sexuality in the elderly. This will stimulate human development and general wellbeing of this population.
