Desarrollo y Validación de una Escala de Actitudes hacia Relaciones Sexuales Pre-Maritales en Adultos Puertorriqueños de 21 a 65 años de Edad que Están Afiliados o no a una Religión

The purpose of this research project was to develop and validate a scale that measure attitudes toward pre-marital sex in a simple of Puerto Rican adults between the ages of 21 and 65 years who have or don’t have a religious affiliation. The Pre-marital Sex Scale was administered to a sample of 152 Puerto Rican adults (109 women, 43 men). Of the sample, 81% indicated having a religious affiliation and 97% indicated having had pre-marital sex. An item analysis and an exploratory principal component factor analysis resulted in a 21 item scale with biserial discrimination index of .40 and greater and a Cronbach’s alpha of .94. In addition, the scale has 3 factors that can explain 60% of the total accounted variance: (a) Sin and marriage, (b) Health and naturalness and (c) Love and commitment. In conclusion, the results of this study demonstrate that the developed scale is reliable, has content and construct validity, and may be used for future research studies.
