Abstract

The article by Bernal and collaborators is the first systematic review realized in Puerto Rico that tries to answer questions about the effectiveness of psychotherapy as practiced in the Island. The results indicate that only about 4 investigations are published per decade. It is obvious that such investigative efforts are insufficient. I identify some important forces that inhibit and show resistance to such knowledge in Puerto Rico. Also, some recommendations are suggested that could further psychotherapy research in Puerto Rico. Nevertheless, in the last years is seems that some positive changes could be discerned, but not sufficiently as to be complacent with the current state of knowledge.
